At long last the Winnie Cooper as promised. It was actually finished over a week ago but with all the excitement of coming home and getting settled it was tucked away for winter wear. Today the sun is not blazing and I found (to my surprise) that I had a willing model to help me out.
Elizabeth is not a fan of photographs but was quite proud to display her new sweater (it’s enough to make a mama’s heart swell).
She loves it and it that makes me so happy.
The pattern is the Wonder Years Sweater, knit in size 8 – 10, using Cascade 220 for the main body.
I hummed and hawed about which size to knit but I am after all my mother’s daughter and decided to knit a size larger than I figured she’d need. Then I added to the body so it would be a comfortable length and then added a little more to the sleeves because I am forever burdened with sleeves that are too short.
I may have overshot it a little – note the rolled sleeves.
Elizabeth says it will be perfect for winter and has no complaints that she’ll be wearing it for the next half decade…we’ll see what she says when she’s 13.
The pattern was great. I loved working with it and found it straightforward and easy. My only complaint would be that the arms are wider than I’d like so I would probably add more decreases earlier on when I knit from the pattern again (which I will). My only frustration was picking up an equal amount of stitches on the button band….the same frustration I had last night working on Yellow Girl.
I also have to give credit where credit is due – although blocking seems like rather a dull task it sure brought the best out of this sweater. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve blocked my knitting but I may have to change my ways.
And the simple fact that this beautiful girl loves every bit of it from baggy sleeves to antiqued wooden buttons is just perfect.
Rachel, your Winnie Cooper is just lovely, but I think your daughter is even more so. Welcome home!xx
it is awesome!!
It turned out so well Rachel! Love it.
[…] Psst: I posted earlier today about the completed Winnie Cooper sweater as I’ve been promising for a couple of weeks now. Check it out here. […]
Uh, very nice pullover! I really like the color combo with jeans! It looks very classic so I think your daughter might still like it when she’s older.
I am so happy. Brilliant sweater. Perfect. Maybe my favorite ver. For reals.
It looks wonderful Rachel! And I love that last picture of Elizabeth and her sweet smile. I’m guessing someone begrudgingly had their hair brushed for the occasion?
Just beautiful. I’m sure Elizabeth will get a lot of wear out of her sweater. Jacinta
I think it is a lovely sweater and a perfect fit! Long sleeves are nice and when it is cold outside they will fit over the mitts-perfect! Blocking is a knitter’s best friend, isn’t it?
Did she like modeling the new sweater too? Looks like she enjoyed herself. It’s so nice to make something with such care and have it be well-received. Makes such a difference & keeps you wanting to knit more…
Great job and it looks wonderful on Elizabeth!
Such a beautiful cardigan, well done. I didn’t realize before how big your daughter is; knitting that sort of size is going to stretch my patience one day!
She certainly looks very happy with her gift; I love that last picture!
*love*
That turned out so well and it looks so great on your lovely model!
I’m also thinking I should enjoy knitting for my kids now, while they’re small, because I think when they are big it’s going to take a lot longer to finish anything… xo
Wow! That’s my kind of sweater. I’d like to make one exactly like it in my size. It looks great on Elizabeth, not too big at all but she has growing room. Those are the exact colors I would have chosen, and I love the buttons you used. Really beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful!!! (… the sweater is pretty nice as well!)
This is great! I Love it!
She is such a lovely lady. And, the sweater looks fantastic on her. I love the colors and especially the wooden buttons. Just great!
So seriously cute!
It turned out beautiful and it looks wonderful on Elizabeth!
Wow!! It turned out absolutely perfect – and suits E so well!! Very glad to see you made it big enough for her to wear for a couple more years!! Loved the peek at your garden too – it looks very promising!!
